Getting Burnt at Roast

While in London a few years ago Joanne and I set out in the early morning from our hotel near Hyde Park for a long, long walk. Our destination: BOROUGH MARKET, the 1000-year-old wholesale and retail market in the Southwark neighborhood in Central London. It’s on the same side of the River Thames as The Tate Modern and The London Eye, and directly across from St. Paul’s Cathedral. The two-hour walk is mostly along the River Thames and the payoff for our trek, in addition to the market itself, was a seafood lunch at SWEETING’S across the river from the market (more about SWEETING’S in a later posting).

I’ve had the pleasure of vacationing in Greece on several occasions. And among the most memorable things about it was the pristine freshness of the fishermen’s catch. It didn’t smell like fish; it smelled like the ocean. That was the “driver” when I created THE OCEANAIRE SEAFOOD ROOM– that and the utter simplicity of the Greeks’ preparations: simply grilled or broiled, or quickly sautéed.

Here’s something to whet your appetite: my list of the best appetizers I’ve enjoyed over the years. One caveat, though: There are so many ways to categorize “best” that this is inevitably more an impressionistic jumble than an authoritative list. After all, on some outings the best appetizer will be the one that provides the greatest culinary “wow.” Other times, it’s homespun comfort food that satisfies, while on occasion it’s the wit of the dish that makes an impression.
